KÖNIG GALERIE

Kreuzberg

International contemporary art gallery housed in a monumental 1960s Brutalist church. The 2015 renovation by Arno Brandlhuber preserved the raw concrete structure while adapting it for exhibitions, earning the 2016 Berlin Architecture Prize.

Architecture & Space

Situated in the former St. Agnes church complex designed by Werner Düttmann (1964-1967), this gallery space exemplifies Brutalist architecture through its massive concrete blocks and exposed surfaces revealing original wood grain patterns. Two large overhead windows flood the largely windowless interior with natural light.

Exhibition Program

  • Represents over 40 international artists across multiple media including sculpture, installation, video, and performance
  • Focus on concept-driven approaches and younger generation artists
  • Works placed in major institutions including MoMA and Guggenheim

Building Features

  • Monumental main exhibition hall with soaring ceiling heights
  • Ground floor gallery space
  • Original concrete surfaces preserved during 2015 renovation
  • Architectural intervention designed to optimize natural lighting
  • Awarded Berlin Architecture Prize in 2016

Evolution

Founded in 2002, the gallery relocated to St. Agnes in 2015 and has since expanded globally with locations in Seoul, Munich, and Mexico City. The brutalist church conversion represents a significant architectural preservation project that maintains the building's dramatic character while serving contemporary exhibition needs.
