Built under Emperor Justinian in the 6th century, the Basilica Cistern exemplifies Byzantine hydraulic engineering. Its rectangular structure of 138 x 64.6 meters rests on 336 marble columns arranged in 12 rows of 28. These 8-meter-high columns support a ceiling of brick arches and vaults.
