The climb of Jbel Toubkal is a grand adventure typically spanning two days. A good level of fitness as well as perseverance and motivation are essential!
Made in Marrakech brings you all the tips and things to know before setting off on this adventure.
Where?
Jbel Toubkal is located about 70 kilometers from Marrakech. The journey from the Red City takes you through a stunning region with magnificent landscapes.
When to go?
The Toubkal National Park is open year-round, but the best time for trekking is from late June to September. The weather is more pleasant and the walking conditions are easier.
How to get there?
The trek to the summit typically starts at Imlil, a small Berber village often referred to as the Moroccan Chamonix.
By car: Follow the route to Lalla Takerkoust dam
By grand taxi: 30-50 dh per trip
How is the ascent organized?
The climb starts from Imlil village, at 1740 meters, and goes up to the refuges at 3207 meters. This climb takes about 5 hours of hiking. Then, you resume the trek very early the next morning after spending the night in one of the refuges. On average, reaching the summit takes about 4 more hours of walking. Finally, the return journey to Imlil!
It might seem long, but rest assured, it's absolutely worth it!
Where to sleep?
You can choose between two refuges, the Toubkal refuge and the Mouflons refuge.
It's important to book your spot in advance as camping in unauthorized areas is prohibited!
What to bring?
Make sure your equipment is suitable for hiking under the best conditions: mountain shoes, warm clothes, sleeping bag, water bottle… Great surprises and thrills await you!
You can choose to carry your own bags but lighten the load by hiring the services of porters and muleteers. Bonus: In Imlil, muleteers are organized in associations, thus benefitting all mule owners from tourist activity.
Do you need a guide?
It's mandatory to be accompanied by a certified local guide throughout the ascent. They can introduce you to aspects of Moroccan life, share knowledge you were unaware of, and perhaps even help you avoid a few unintended detours!
