Built between 1929 and 1935, the dam was designed for the irrigation of the Haouz plain and the production of electric power. Before the lake was filled, the site was home to the shrine and mausoleum of Lalla Takerkoust, a woman to whom people would pray and make offerings to boost fertility. Today, her name is given to the village, the dam, the lake, and a spring.
Elevated in the late 70s, the dam measures 350 meters long and 60 meters high. As for the lake, it stretches over 7 kilometers and acts as a real oasis set between the desert and mountains. The green valleys and plantations surrounding the lake contrast with the dry, arid lands of Agafay and the sometimes snow-capped peaks of the Atlas Mountains. And when these are reflected on the water of the lake, it is simply breathtaking!
Over the years, the lake has seen the emergence of numerous restaurants and activity providers, bringing joy to both Marrakech residents and tourists in search of nature. Indeed, besides beautiful hikes, one can explore the area on ATVs or horseback, and cross the lake by canoe, paddle board or jet ski.
When lunchtime comes, there's a plethora of dining options to choose from, as restaurants of all sorts have multiplied in the area.
