In the twelfth century, the Almohads built the Menara garden and the pond that stands at the center of the site. Back then, this water feature served several functions: it was a water reserve, but also a pool used by soldiers to learn swimming, in preparation for a potential crossing of the Mediterranean towards Al Andalus. In 1870, a beautiful Saadian pavilion with a green roof was built to house, according to legend, the romantic rendezvous of the sultans of the time. It is even said that one of them used to have the habit of throwing his paramour into the large pond at sunrise...
Nowadays, the lovers who walk there certainly do not end up in the water, but they still love to admire a wonderful sunset there. Indeed, the landscape that Menara offers at the end of the day is particularly breathtaking. The last rays of the sun reflect amazingly on the large basin, lighting up the entire site. Around it, shrubs stretch as far as the eye can see, offering a total change of scenery. A magical garden where time seems to stand still... Families also come during the day and organize small picnics in the olive grove, enjoying the coolness that the place offers to visitors.
Ancient olive trees, and more...
In the garden, trees are planted as far as the eye can see: olive trees, of course, but also cypresses and palm trees. They are irrigated through underground pipes that connect them to the basin, itself fed by the water from the mountains about thirty kilometers from Marrakech. This hydraulic system, over 700 years old, is a testament to the ingenuity of the architects who designed the site. A reservoir releases water to irrigate the plantations at the most opportune time of the day.
Spreading over 88 hectares, the Menara garden demonstrates geniality in agricultural techniques and irrigation methods of the time's dynasties. Stunning in both its beauty and history, it represents a must-visit site in the ochre city. Everywhere, couples and families stroll, enjoying the view before them. Around the basin, children are often seen feeding the fish, which have made this spectacular place their home. At the entrance, camels and ponies wait for tourists eager for a brief ride on the back of the animal. The atmosphere at Menara is family-friendly and perfect for wrapping up a beautiful summer day. Water, sun, palace, and greenery: yet another exceptional site not to be missed.
