Lake Lalla Takerkoust: A unique place with a surprising history

Lac Lalla Takerkoust

A favorite summer destination for residents of Marrakech, this artificial body of water created by a dam less than a century ago offers a day or weekend escape from the heat of the red city. Photo: DR

Between legends and beliefs, Lalla Takerkoust stands out for the unique story of its origins. Initially named "Cavagnac" during the French protectorate, both the dam and the lake were later renamed Lalla Takerkoust after the local saint protector, who is also buried there. This name also refers to a water body upstream of the mountain, associated by locals with a passage from the Quran about the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus from Surah XVIII, "Al-Kahf".

This narrative describes how God put young Christians from Ephesus into a mystical sleep after they were walled in a cave by their pagan persecutors. This story has given rise to numerous popular interpretations. Indeed, in Amizmiz, there are seven aligned graves near the source of Lalla Takerkoust, which is known for its therapeutic effects: people come here to have turtles nibble on their bread-coated feet.

A full range of activities

While the history of the area is rich, the activities available are equally plentiful. Many seek refuge here to enjoy the scenic beauty (the lake offers a breathtaking view of the Atlas Mountains reflected on the sunlit water), and a stay at Lake Lalla Takerkoust is full of possibilities. Those who prefer to relax can lounge by the waterfront, basking in the sunshine. For the adventurous, there's paddle boating, windsurfing, row boating, and canoeing available at affordable prices.

If you're keen on exploring the surroundings, numerous excursions are organized in the nearby countryside, and it's possible to rent quads or motorcycles. For eco-tourism enthusiasts, nothing beats a nature walk or a session of carp fishing. There's no room for boredom at Lake Lalla Takerkoust: everything is set up for everyone to find something they enjoy and to make the most of their time away from the hustle and heat of the city.

Around the lake, several small establishments offer dining options. On the menu: traditional dishes and delicious mint teas. The area is also ideal for picnicking, with many trails offering panoramic views of this little piece of paradise. And for those who wish to extend their stay, it's possible to spend the night in one of the nearby inns or guest houses. It's tempting to stay longer: how can one leave such a magnificent place with so much to offer?
