Marrakech boasts over 40 craft cooperatives

The number of cooperatives operating in the craft sector in Marrakech and its surrounding areas has reached 42, boasting a total of 1,332 active craftsmembers as of the year 2004, according to a report from the regional craft delegation.

Regarding the amount of members' contributions, it is estimated at 3,764,500 DH, noted the same source, adding that by geographical distribution, the old medina ranks first with 16 cooperatives and 621 craftsmen, followed by the Marrakech prefecture with 12 units comprising 252 craftsmen, the district of Sidi Youssef Ben Ali (5 cooperatives and 116 craftsmen), the Al Haouz province (5 cooperatives and 235 craftsmen), and the Chichaoua province, with 4 cooperatives and 108 craftsmen. In terms of activity sectors, textiles lead with 15 cooperatives, followed by the construction (9), metal utensils (4), and pottery and leather and wooden items, with 3 cooperatives each.

As part of the efforts by the regional craft delegation to promote this sector, two additional cooperatives were established, including one for disabled girls, which will specialize in sewing and embroidery.

Regarding the number of beneficiaries of vocational training in the craft sectors (textile, mining, leather, and pottery), it is estimated at 341 people, concludes the document.
