Located in a former foundouk, "Maison de la Photographie" is a private institution created by Hamid Mergani and Patrick Manac’h, both lovers of Morocco and, of course, photography. Since 2009, their goal has been to demonstrate Morocco's extraordinary diversity through numerous images captured from the inception of photography to the modern era, spanning 1878 to 1960.
Over the years, donations have enriched their collection, which today includes more than 10,000 documents. Visitors can explore numerous photographs taken by both amateurs and famous professionals, unveiling various aspects of Morocco and its cities, as well as its people through striking portraits. The museum also features glass plates, newspapers, postcards, and documentaries. It’s a photographic archive that reflects the diverse cultural and historical themes linked to Morocco’s history, revealed through its permanent collection and thematic temporary exhibitions.
Temporary exhibition:
"Félix, a life in Marrakech" celebrates the work of Fernand Bidon, also known as Félix, one of the first photographers to document the city. Having settled in Marrakech from 1912, he captured the city's transformations until his death in 1963. His sensitive approach preserved the landscapes and faces of the city, offering a valuable historical record. The House of Photography maintains his prints and glass plates, real windows into Marrakech’s past.
