Some professions are more often pursued by men than women, such as carpenters or lumberjacks, which seem self-evident. In tailoring too, men often dominate, especially in Morocco. Mohammed Agayou, a tailor in Marrakech for nearly 25 years, is a perfect example.
A friendly smile that hides an innocent mind, two unwavering traits of this man. His diligence at work and his devotion to his craft are equally steadfast, but to see them, one must admire one of his creations worn by its requester.
After finishing his studies in 1987, Mohammed landed his first job as a tailor with a major textile company. It was more than a discovery for him; it was a revelation. A young prodigy had just realized the extent of his talent. Fourteen years later, in 1991, after scrimping and saving every month, he achieved his goal and opened his own workshop.
A small workshop, but in a significant location! Situated in the medina, in the R'mila neighborhood in a small gallery, Mohammed follows in the footsteps of the old masters of the trade. Some Marrakech citizens claim that this gallery is the oldest assembly of tailors in Marrakech. Although today, there are only 4 maalams (masters) sharing the space.
The care he puts into every stitch is surely the best proof of his dexterity. He has a knack for making men look good. Yes, because Mohammed doesn't measure ladies. From shorts to pants, shirts to jackets, through uniforms and coats, nothing escapes him. With a range of 200 fabrics on offer, it's much more than bespoke; it's a unique piece that dresses you.
Regarding style, he sometimes walks around with a measuring tape in hand in the aisles of big stores to check out the trends. These little excursions make him a true creator. He doesn't copy; he innovates. Far from the image of our forefathers who got a blazer tailored and came out dressed to the nines, this tailor stays up-to-date and continuously renews his collection.
The prices are more than fair, given the quality of the tailoring and the fabric. Expect to pay 1,000 to 1,500 dh for a complete suit, and around 250 dh for a shirt, depending on the fabric used. Look at the shops around you, and ask yourself where the real deal is? Sure, in a store, you enter, pick what is imposed on you, pay, and leave... in a few minutes. Mohammed's niche takes about two weeks for a suit. But with dozens of loyal clients, he prefers to maintain that relationship by aiming for flawless finishes.
They say 'It's not what you wear, but how you wear it!' But what when it's what you wear that carries you? Because wearing a tailored garment is like meeting your soulmate; it enhances you, never bothers you, and boosts your confidence.
