A part of Marrakech's history was lost with the partial demolition of the legendary Cine Theatre Palace. The construction site targeted the vault dominating the inner courtyard, which once housed the outdoor theater's screen. According to a statement from the Save Cinemas In Morocco association, these demolition works are the beginning of a future hotel construction project that will rise in place of the mythical building. This decision has left the residents of Gueliz stunned as they watch the cultural riches of their neighborhood turn to dust.
Once upon a time at the Cine Theatre Palace
The cine-theatre Palace was a testament to the meeting between a man's passion and a city's love for cinema. This man was Mr. Friggeri who came to Morocco with a dream of opening an art-deco style cinema, similar to the Eden of the Lumière brothers. And this city is Marrakech, an undying lover of the seventh art, evidenced by the upcoming 17th edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival.
1926 is a key date in the history of the Cine Theatre Palace- the year it opened. From that moment on, the story took off and soared into a festive atmosphere. The venue was considered the kingdom's first multicultural site and attracted many curious onlookers who quickly became regulars. Renowned stars such as Nat King Cole and Rita Hayworth performed at the Palace, sending shivers of emotion through its walls. With its art-deco style and three halls, the Cine Theatre Palace was an innovative place. It boasted the first outdoor cinema in Morocco!
Yet, despite more than 40 years of success, arts, and encounters, the cine-theatre closed its doors in 1984. This closure was merely a long slumber, as over 30 years later, driven by the associations Save the cinemas in Morocco and Friends of the Cine Theatre Palace, the place resurfaced to the great delight of the local residents. In 2014, they celebrated at the 'Guéliz en fête' event for World Heritage Day.
The reunion between the cine-theatre and the residents was, however, short-lived. The future of the Cinema Palace is now more threatened than ever, as the Marrakchis prepare to celebrate the art of cinema in a few weeks with the return of the Marrakech International Film Festival.
