Where?
60km southeast of Marrakech, heading towards the Atlas Mountains, of course.
How to get there?
It will take about an hour from Marrakech.
- By car: follow the Ourika road.
- By grand taxi: expect to pay between 300 and 400 Dh per trip.
- By booking an organized excursion including taxi and guide (price varies by agency).
What to see?
- At km 34, don't hesitate to stop at Douar Tnine Ourika. This central town of the region hosts a large souk every Monday where inhabitants from neighboring hamlets come to negotiate their harvests and buy everyday products. The folkloric and authentic atmosphere will immediately immerse you in the local culture.
- On the road, you'll follow the riverbanks and their shaded meadows. The surrounding greenery and the ochre of the earth form amazing landscapes where you can spot small houses on the mountainsides and hills.
- The Setti-Fatma waterfalls: starting from the small village, you'll easily find the first waterfall where there are obviously many people. For the following ones, you'll need to venture a bit further. You can still take swimming breaks in the very cool river water.
When to go?
- Seasonality: all year round. Summer for coolness, autumn for low sun and vibrant colors, winter for long solitary walks, or spring to see flowering fields, villagers on their lands, and wheat ready for harvest.
- Hours: it's best to leave early in the morning to enjoy the whole day. Especially if you wish to hike at your own pace.
Should you hire a guide?
It depends on what you want to do and your preferences. A guide is not mandatory but can advise you based on your walking abilities, desires...
- Price: expect about 300 Dh for the day.
You can also use an agency to organize your day with transport, guide, and lunch with a local family.
What to bring?
It's best to bring good walking shoes, a hat for sun protection, a water bottle per person, your swimsuit, and of course, your camera!
Where to have lunch?
You can choose according to everyone's taste. Many riverside restaurants offer tagines and other grilled dishes. You can also pack a picnic or arrange with your guide to have lunch with a local family.
And for children?
They can come with you too. They can swim in the river or even join you on a hike thanks to the mule drivers who offer their services. A donkey ride in the Atlas, discovering the Marrakech countryside, and lunch with a local family - they won't soon forget this experience!
